COMMENT: Why can't I access my local bank
account with the new library computers? The site I
am trying says--"Browser not compatible." |
|
|
RESPONSE: Some sites, usually
business-related, require the use of the Internet
Explorer (Microsoft) browser and use specific "IE
tags" and "Active X" controls to add functionality
to their sites. In doing so, they can also make
their sites incompatible with non-Microsoft
browsers. The site you are accessing does require
the use of Internet Explorer and, as such, is not
usable on our computers. We regret the
inconvenience, but the design and requirements of
the Web site are the responsibility of its creator,
not the Library.NOTE: Last November we
installed new Linux-based, vendor-managed computers.
These offer many advantages including reliability,
security, cost-effectiveness, consistency and
management tools. They do not, however, offer all
the functionality of a home computer. It is not our
goal for the public library computers to act as home
computers; i.e. allowing user configurations,
cookies, plug-ins, retained passwords, and all such
features. It is just such features that make public
computers a management nightmare. We hope that our
patrons understand that public computers are
designed for information access, not for the conduct
of personal business like banking, brokerage
accounts, tax submissions, or the like. Indeed, we
advise users against inputting personal account
information into any "public" access computer.

COMMENT: "[Buy] more new release videos." |
|
|
RESPONSE: We wish we could buy more! However,
in anticipation of coming budget cuts, we are
spending 25-30% less on materials in 2009. We have
made book purchasing the highest priority in 2009
and thereby are consciously reducing our audiovisual
purchases. We could use some donations in this area!
A receipt will be provided for all such donations.
THANK YOU!

COMMENT: "[You should] have activities or events at the
Civic Center, where there is more parking! Patrons
of Library often can find no where to park." |
|
|
RESPONSE: We do occasionally schedule events
we know are going to be large outside of the
Library. For example, most of our summer reading
performances in 2008 were at the Community Center.
While it is true that our parking can sometimes be
problematic, it is often because of an event held by
one of our meeting room renters. Our library events
are generally pretty short and we do attempt to
balance community interest in the event with the
parking requirements it will entail. Please
understand that we are attempting to satisfy the
needs of all of our customers and it is sometimes a
balancing act between competing interests. Larry

COMMENT: "Please buy more new young adult books." |
|
|
RESPONSE: Thanks for
your comment, YA reader! 10% of our 2009
book-buying budget is dedicated to YA books, the
same percentage (but fewer actual dollars, due to
overall budget cuts) as last year. While YA
books won't get a larger slice of the pie this year,
your librarian in charge of selecting YA books will
gladly take suggestions for titles, authors, series,
even topics you'd like to see more of in that
collection. And be sure to use our catalog to
request books from other libraries! Lori Roholt,

COMMENT: " I think you should get more YA movies and
video games." |
|
|
RESPONSE: Thank you
for your suggestion. First, we hope you have
followed our YA movies as they moved into the
general DVD collection. You can still distinguish
DVDs with particular appeal for young adults by the
yellow ‘YA’ spine sticker. Second, our current
budgetary situation does not allow us to purchase as
much AV material as we might like. Currently, 10%
of our overall AV budget goes to YA materials.
Third, we do not currently have any plans to offer
video games. Again, because of a limited budget for
materials, video games are not a priority for our
library. We simply lack the resources to collect
materials that may quickly be technologically
obsolete, particularly subject to theft, and
appropriate only for those with particular gaming
systems (that is to say we’d be hard pressed to
offer Xbox, PS3, Wii, and DS games). Lori

COMMENT: ""You are doing a great job here! I
love this library. It provides a great place to find
good books, do homework, meet friends and so on.
Keep up the good work! A very impressed teen |

RESPONSE: Thanks! Our teen opinions are
important to us. Please let us know of anything we
can do better! Larry Hlavsa, Library Director

COMMENT: "It's too peaceful." |
|
|
RESPONSE: Well, yes, it is peaceful in the
library and we'd like to keep it that way. If you
mean, however, that you think we should have more
programs, I'd suggest talking to our programming
librarian about your ideas. She's always happy to
get public input. Larry Hlavsa, Library Director

COMMENT: "[I'm] not happy with the new phone
service - answering machine." |
|
|
RESPONSE: Previously our phones were answered
by staff at the circulation desk. They directed
calls, but much of their time involved the
repetitive task of giving out hours information.
This took away significantly from the time they had
to deal with in-house customers. The new phone
system provides automated hours info and push button
access to specific departments or people. It really
is much more efficient than the old method. While I
sympathize with the notion that having a person to
talk with is preferable, I hope you understand that
we have to make the best use of our staff's time
that we can. The new phone system is an effort to do
that. |
